THE DOLLS

(There’s a sound – it seems like coming from a music box - a female figure comes in and gathers the scattered toys that are spread all over a child’s room. At the proscenium and sit on a chest of drawers there are two actors: female and male dolls).

Female figure - No one plays with these toys anymore ... and I don’t know why ... I'll give them away. They may please other children. And these dolls? (She caresses them) No, these, for now, stay here. They are so cute!

(When she leaves the scene, the male doll gets up and goes to the bottom of the scene to look outside. Meanwhile the female doll is shocked to see the male doll walking. When the male doll goes back to his place, he is also surprised to see the female doll looking at him.)

M Doll – Do you also move as people?!
F Doll - (very quietly) Scheee ...!
M Doll – It was only now that I could understand it!
F Doll - (Idem) Scheee ...!
M Doll - Every night I pull you and you are always a doll!!!
F Doll - (Idem) Scheee ...!
M Doll - I thought I was the only one moving!
F Doll - (Always very quietly) I also thought that I was the only one moving!
M Doll - And haven’t you ever felt that I was pulling you every night?!
F Doll - (Idem) I thought it was a child pulling me!
M Doll - A child?! This was a long time ago. Now no one wants to play with us anymore.
F Doll - You're right! I wonder why…
F Doll - Scheee ... Don’t speak so loud!
M Doll - There's no one out there! I never get up without thinking if anyone is out there! And we, the dolls, are never mistaken!!! ... People do make mistakes!
F Doll - To tell the truth, I was never mistaken ... But until now I also have never had the courage to try to get up from the position in which Men left me ...
M Doll - Listen! Why do you speak so quietly? Aren’t you able to speak louder?
F Doll - I think I am ... but I’ve never tried screaming. I am like the children ... at home they are always quiet playing in some machines ... they not even talk to us ... and as we never move, they got tired of us!
M Doll - Nonsense! Men found out they like doing other things rather than playing with us. Doing so, children are quiet and do not bother anyone.
F Doll -If they were like us, they would better see how they look like inside.

M Doll Listen, now that we know each other, we shall speak a lot ... to get to know each other even better, inside and outside... May God allow this to us.

F DOLL - But I only know to talk about what happened to me.
F DOLL - Listen! Do you also feel a very big heart inside of you? ... One almost not fitting inside the chest? Ah! I'm so small! And the heart is inside of me ... waiting, ready to come out ... ready to give away ...
M Doll- Let our hearts be the repetition of one another!... Let your hands bring me festivity, and peace ... peace that is deserved! ... (Pause.) Give me your words! ... those you keep ... those words that do not die or are killed! ...
F Doll - I'm so tiny! Why was I given such a big heart? ...
M Doll – Believe in the heart! He does really know what he wants! ... There was no need for him to learn what he wanted ... Our mind needs to read the wishes of our heart! ...
F Doll - Sometimes the mind wants to be more than the heart ... and turns her back on it ...
M Doll - The head should only know what the heart wants! The heart never fails us, it’s us who fail the heart!

(There’s a repetition of the initial sound. The dolls are static again. The female figure returns to scene to pick a lost toy. The dolls exchange a knowing look.)
